Focus on One Team

rockets.jpeg

Since 2007, the Rockets have been shooting more and more three's. The number increased almost twice as much.  However, their winning percentage each year does not coincide entirely with the trend of their three's. When they shot less three's, their winning percentages are just as good as when they started to shoot more.

Surprisingly, after doing a regression against winning percentage, I found rebounds and assists actually are more statistically significant than three-pointers.  Therefore, next I would like to find out how big men, who are mostly responsible for rebounds, contribute to the Rockets win.

Just by eyeballing the data I can tell Big Men hardly contribute three's to the team and the regression I ran on this data generated many NA's. Only in the field goal did it generate a slight relationship to the winning percentage.

To conclude, three pointers are definitely a trend in the basketball world as teams and players are shooting more. However, it does not change the way the games are played or the duties of each position on a team. Basketball is a comprehensive game, three pointer is only an element of it. Due to limited knowledge I can only analyze this far, but I'm interested to learn more analytical skills. Up till now I do not see three pointers as the most efficient way to win. In this summer I'll try to get more data to understand whether three-pointers are indeed the most efficient.
